As I have learned from the class, the music connected with Frankenstein is really new to me. Though the movies are impressive to the audiences and the novels can show more details about the story, music contains unique charms that novels and movies have. Compared with movies and novels, music clips have more advantages in showing the soul and mind of the music-maker with shorter time and in a more efficient way. Different tones of music reveals different emotions.

The first clip is the music video named Frankenstein from Willoughby. The tone of the song is obviously down and gloomy. Every time you cry on my shoulder, It’s colder than the man with my heart. It truly show that the feeling of the scientist is sadness, loneliness and being lost. But he never tries to understand how the creature he created thinks. He still thought the creature is only a body without soul and an evil with ugly face. All of what the song tries to convey fit what the Mary Shelly said in her novels. Although the creature doesn’t have a smart outward appearance of a human, the creature’s internal world is quite the same as those of human beings. He feels alone and he also needs love, companion and fellowship. These things can be read through the lyrics, the tones, and the video. So that’s the connection between this song and Frankenstein novel.

The second music clip tells about the story on Frankenstein’s wedding. The creature tried to let Frankenstein understand his pain by killing Elizabeth. The music played background is called My Body Is A Cage. This drama opens with Elizabeth sitting at the table alone waiting for Victor coming to the wedding impatiently. Someone unexpected approaches as the music starts. Elizabeth turn into intense when she heard the sound. The song states that “My body is a cage that keeps me from dancing with the one I love, but my mind holds the key.” The creature tells his story through the first half of the clip. Although he was given life by Frankenstein, he gains a lot of pains and loneliness. Others judge him as an ugly monster or not a real human. So he swears that he will pass this helplessness and depressing feeling to Frankenstein. He is a monster but he still have the authority to seek for his own love and companionship. The creature told all his pains to Elizabeth. At the same time, Frankenstein came into the room. Due to a feeling of scared, the creature killed Elizabeth. Victor attempts to end his creature by pistol as the police bust in. Victor and the police shot each other. This scene sends a collapse to the emotion of the creature. The only person that regards him as a life died. He lost the last hope to relieve from the world and the only chance to get rid of the body. This song was inserted into the right place to strengthen the atmosphere of the musical with more sadness.

The Frankenstein inspired song that I have found is “what I’ve done” by Linkin Park. Through the lyrics “There’s no blood, there’s no alibi. Cause I’ve drawn regret from the truth of a thousand lies.”, which conveys that the creature truly feels alone and tries to again other’s trust and companion. “Erase myself and let go of what I’ve done.” Let me remind of the Frankenstein’s Monster killed the little girls. The monster didn’t mean to do it and he felt scared after he found that he made the mistake. This is truly the thought in his mental world. Through the whole clip of the music, abandonment shows the feeling of the monster. He is struggling with the pain of the mistake he’ve made and to relieve from his body.

Frankenstein is even applied into the music industry. Not until I have learned so much about Frankenstein, I haven’t realized there are so many connections between the music and Frankenstein. Music is a really efficient way to show the feelings and emotions.

While the whole story is telling the Frankenstein’s monster how he was born and what kind of harm he brought to other people, the main concept of the story is to find out the true evil in those characters. It depend on the viewers ideas because people may interpreter from different sides. The main task of our first paper of ENGL 106 class is to illustrate our choices of evil and to quote from the book. Though I have finished only several parts of the book, some sentences and phrases help me to have an idea on the evil.

Many people may say that Frankenstein is definitely evil in the story. In my viewpoint, the evil is more like the dark side of Frankenstein’s mind so I cannot agree with that the evil is Frankenstein because in the novel, Frankenstein’s saying” It was the secrets of heaven and earth that I desired to learn; and whether it was the outward substance of things, or the inner spirit of nature and the mysterious soul of man who occupied me(39),” which illustrate the passion he spend on learning, proves the humble character he has a willing to learn and curiosity to make some contributions to solving the mystery soul of man. At that time, it should be true that he originally plans to make his invention beneficial to people.

His willingness reached the ultimate and showed a negative result. “Wealth was an inferior object; but what glory would attend the discovery if I could banish disease from the human frame and render man invulnerable to any but a violent death(42).” This is sentence is really fascinating and it is suitable to explain the madness of Frankenstein during his experiment. He was addicted to focusing on the glory that he may gain after his success but he missed one thing that the eagerness of success accelerate the process of the greed occupying his mind. In page 54, the description of his satisfaction of the monster he made reflects that he really enjoyed the fame and glory from the “great” invention. That shows the completely different two characters of Frankenstein.

The further support of my idea is in page 58, Frankenstein described the monster “Beautiful! – Great God!”. Although it is short, it shows that Frankenstein has reached the peak of his madness. From our eyes, the figure of the monster is not as beautiful as Frankenstein’s comment, more we think is horrible and ugly. It shows us that he was incredibly greedy and the greed in his personality which I call is the dark side in his heart creates the monster.

From the childhood of Frankenstein, he said that he was surrounded by love and care so at that time what he thought was pleasant and positive. The monster regards as the description of his greed and self satisfaction in his heart. Since he used to be humble, he has morals, values and a positive spirit inside of him. Miserably, his spirit is corrupted by the glory and fame he is pursuing for.

Absolut Shelley is a product that influenced by Frankenstein. It combines parts of Frankenstein’s figure in its bottle design. This advertisement was first launched in 1980 so it had experienced a super long campaign and it really impressed the consumers by its distinctive shape of the bottle.

The monster of Frankenstein has a horrible face that is recognized by people easily. So when something is similar to the figure of the terrifying face, it often happens that people may establish connection between these two things. That’s the effect that the designers of the advertisement are really pleased to see. Also from my opinion that I actually am not so familiar with the story of Frankenstein, I really like the design work of the bottle because it is designed fancy and though looks a little weird. I like something different and unique. The scarcity determines its rising value, especially for its interesting appearance. I will definitely own it as a collection.

From the other side, people who are the fans of the movie Frankenstein will be crazy for the product because it contains the components of the figure of Frankenstein. It’s fantastic to purchase this bottle as a proof to show the love to Frankenstein. I also have the same feeling because I am a crazy fan of Girls’ Generation and I always try to own something that have little connection with them. If Girls’ Generation appear in the ads of one soft beverage, I will truly buy one or two bottles of the drink even I don’t know whether I like the taste of the beverage. In my view, this phenomenon acts the same on Absolut Shelley.

The advertisement of Absolut Shelley makes a good use of the psychology. It attracts the fans of the movie Frankenstein also catches the eye of those people who like things special and delicate.

Every one have experience for the first time watching horror movies.. Actually the first time that I have watched the horror movie was a little bit late, about when I was 7 or 8 years old.As the author was lead to the horror movies by his father, I enjoyed reading books of horrible stories, though it ‘s not really horrible but detective stories, and later I found the fun in the movies. The reason why I had an experience watching the horrible movie so late is because that in China, horrible movies were forbidden to show on TV until I was adept to using computer and I can search for movies online.

Frankenstein is regarded as a horror movie definitely. After the basic plot of Frankenstein of stealing bodies from the aforementioned cemetery, Brett Gallman, who is the author writing this review, has said” Henry has created a monster here, not a man, and the rest of the film is concerned with the fallout.” ,which alludes a terrified atmosphere for the next scene of the film. Brett also found out why the monster seemed so inhuman and horrible was that the face of the Monster’s plastered with an eerie grin and the Monster itself didn’t speak. I quite accord with the explanation suggested by the author because the outward appearance play a big part showing a feeling of thrilled but the silence can make people to be extremely tense when accidentally stimulated by the monster, the consequence of being terrified can be amplified to the maximum.

In terms of the horror movies, the participation of the actors and actress has a significant effect.” The film also features an excellent performance from Colin Clive, who brings the moody, obsessive title character to life,” which expresses the author’s idea vividly. Although at that time, the technology of making a film is not so advanced and developed as we do nowadays, every movement of the actors and actress in the film show their emotions and ideas without voices. That’s trully amazing and marvelous. “Lionel Belmore, has a nice role as Little Maria’s father; though he is only featured in a couple of scenes, they are highly effective in communicating a father’s grief over a dead child,” I endorse this idea because the little girl’s death which has converted the Monster to be a real monster and it is like a process activating the wild nature in the deep heart of the Monster. Finally, people got angry about the death of the little girl and this scene lead to the climax of the whole movie.

Since many years has passed, the film of Frankenstein still have it unique magic to attract people to watch it. It’s really worth it as the author marked “ you can’t go wrong with either release because if you’re a horror fan, you must own this film.”

Due to the darkness and symbolization of the skeleton. Not until 1935, the cemetery skeleton appeared again on the scene of film. Although it is seen briefly in the graveyard in the film, it shows something really special.

Skeleton without skins and flesh always represents something related to darkness or horror as the author of the Cemetery Skeleton has states,’ the skeleton is an ancient and enduring symbol of death.” The author has a great sight of catching the details in the film as that he get the picture of the background that Frankenstein and his hunchbacked assistant are digging the graveyard after the funeral is over. From the cemetery skeleton standing off to the side, the author captures the figure that the set of the graveyard reveals the status, background and religious believe of the dead. I advocate the author’s idea on this. I am quite confused about the characteristic of the skeleton so I do not think that it has extra meanings.

The other thing that the author writes about that interests me is the movement of Frankenstein throwing a shovelful of dirt into the skeleton’s face. The author comments that it’s a James Whale humorous moment and it also show the disrespect of death of Frankenstein and his madness in concentrating on his experiment. The author reasonably amplify this point because in the paragraph before he has mentioned that in Middle Ages, the image of the dancing skeleton mocked life’s brevity which means that Frankenstein is fully addicted to his experiment and he even does not care about offending the symbol of death. This action highlights the inside world of Frankenstein. I agree with what the author has said about the respectful behavior of Frankenstein to the skeleton.

By reading the article, I realize that even the tiny decoration of the background in the film was well designed. The skeleton helps to describe the inner space of the character of Frankenstein, strengthens the atmosphere of the story and really changes my view of this movie that is told about the story of Frankenstein’s monster into an aesthetic movie.

In Nate Yapp’s article, he states that the figure of Frankenstein with a pair of bolts in the neck, and grey skin do not originally come from the novel of Mary Shelley but appears in John Whale’s adaptation in 1931. He briefly describes the story that how Henry Frankenstein, who is addicted to his experiment which focus on making an inhuman being alive, finally succeed in a stormy night with his assistant. He tends to describe the graveyard more because this scene is the start of the whole story and leave many hints for the viewers to have more space to imagine what happens next. The process of their digging the grave reveals that they have the fanaticism on their research.

Nate also shows that the name of the actor who plays as the monster because in the movie, it is marked as ”???”. That is the most interesting thing in this movie. Although Nate explains that the actor is not so famous at that time, I still cannot accept this reason and I think that the director must have something want to express to the audience. So Nate raise a very good question. In my view, the direct may convey the message that this phenomenon has already appeared in our daily life.

Karloff provides the image of Frankenstein’s monster. At that time, the image was drawn over and over by others and was used on certain scenes that many aspect monsters was shown on the movies . Then Universal copyrighted the figure of the monster as an iconic presentative of the story of Frankenstein. The author, Nate, compliments the movie in many ways, such as movie techniques and the characters in the movie, though he is not satisfied with Elizabeth and he has recommend an actress that may perform and illustrate the role better. Actually I can agree on most ideas of Nate but only one thing that I want to contradict is that why obsession, madness, and perverted science can be associate together. The obsession and madness in science can also lead to something pleasant and helpful to human beings. That’s my thought before I read this book so I may learn more about the whole story and the background.

Actually I am a crazy fan of music and I am really pleased to share my thoughts about the remixes in music. I was born in China and when I started to listen to music, remix has already been used in Chinese pop songs. Many Chinese pop stars rewrote the lyrics of Japanese songs and added some modern elements into the tones of the music and then released these songs as their own new songs in 1970s and 1980s. Nowadays the methods used in remix seem to be more various.

The picture on the left shows my favourite singing groups called Girls’ Generation from South Korea. This is the cover of their newly released album named Mr. Taxi. The singing group consists of nine girls that seven of them are original South Korean and two of them were born in United States. They combine eastern culture and western culture together and create a remix of music. So that is the reason that why their songs can be accepted by people all around the world.

Indeed, I love K-pop whose full name is Korea-pop and also I have listened many songs from Japan, China, Germany and United States. Obviously, significant differences appear in eastern music and western music. But K-pop is more like western music. They use much B-box and club music into their own music creation. Rap plays a big part in all Korea songs. That’s why that almost every singing group has more than one rappers in their team. Though Japanese singers and singing groups like using remixes equally, they like inserting electronic music into their works as what the American singers have done in 1980s.

Girls’ Generation held a concert in Madison Square in New York City last October. It was proved to be a big success and highlights among TV, newspaper and online. After that concert, Girls’ Generation cooperated with Snopp Dogg who is a famous rapper in United States and created a brand new song called The Boys. This piece of music is also a remix of the singers from different countries and different cultures. Last summer, I’ve been to South Korea to watch Girls’ Generation the 2nd Asia Tour in the Seoul Olympic Arena. The live performance relied more on their improvisation. With the participation of the concert goers, the tones and rhythms of the songs varied that the atmosphere went to the highest point because the concert goers were really pleased to see the changes that they made during the live. The entertainment company has a good control of the audiences’ feelings and leads to the singing group to do the right thing. In the field of music, it is too often to find a remix in it.

Actually it’s the first time to write something on the blog. So it is a brief introduction of myself.

Well, my name is Shida Liu. I’m from Shanghai, China. It’s the second semester of my freshman year. I’m studying chemical engineering here.

I’m a crazy fan of Derrick Rose who is the point guard in Chicago Bulls. I admire his speed and dunks in the games. I really appreciate that if any of you are interested in it ,we can watch the play-offs of this season together.

Also, music plays a big part in my life. Saxophone is the instrument that I have played for six years. K-pop, whose full name is Korea pop music, is my favourite. And Girls’ Genration from South Koera is my favourite singing group. They are not so popular in America as they are in Asia.

I have learned German for two years in my high school. I’m very interested in Germany indeed because of its developed industry system and the spirit and the concentration of Germans when they focus on one thing. The standard of their products is unnormally strict which is obviously different than that in China. So that is probably the reason that Germany boomed after World War 1.

I enjoy eating the food when I come to a brand new place. Various cuisines in different cultures drive me crazy. In my view, the meaning of the life is eating. Eating cannot mean everything, but without eating I can do nothing at all. Always when I hear that my friends cannot eat seafood or something really delicious, I feel a little pity that they lose a lot of delight in their life.
